Public procurement accounts for 70 per cent of expenditure

Mr. Kwame Asante, Vice Chairman of the Public Procurement Authority (PPA), said on Tuesday that public procurement alone accounts for over 70 Per cent of government expenditure and this required efficient and prudent management. The Public Procurement law, Act 663, therefore, is part of strategic measures put in place to provide administrative and institutionalized arrangement for public procurement to ensure state resources were managed judiciously. Mr. Asante said this at a day�s training session for all regional ministers and their deputies on Public Procurement Planning and implementation in Kumasi on Tuesday. The training was jointly organized by the PPA and the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning (MOFEP). He said fairness, accountability and transparency had always been the bedrock of the government and it would continue to ensure that state resources were judiciously. Prof Newman Kwadwo Kusi, Acting Chief Director of MOFEP, said the government recognized the importance of efficient management as a tool for achieving socio-economic objectives, particularly in the area of poverty reduction. Mr. Kofi Opoku Manu, the Ashanti Regional Minister, said the impact on the economy cannot be overemphasized and that it was an effective tool in creating wealth for the nation.
