Suspensions Not Good For NPP - Nana Ohene Ntow

Former General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Ohene Ntow, says the recent wave of suspension cannot be good for the party.

He admitted the NPP is in very difficult times, saying, “I don’t think that these developments inure to the unity and harmony of the party. I don’t believe that.”

Nana Ohene Ntow was speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday.

He was commenting on a decision of the National Executive Committee of the party to suspend General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong and 2nd Vice Chairman Sammy Crabbe.

The two are accused of conduct not conducive to the interest of the party and which violate provisions of the NPP’s constitution.

Several petitions were brought against them at the National Disciplinary Committee of the party which unanimously recommended suspension.

The NEC took a similar decision on October 23, to suspend then National Chairman Paul Afoko.

Nana Ohene Ntow believes the suspensions are motivated by deep factionalism in the opposition party with persons perceived to be Kufuor/Alan Kyerematen supporters being unduly punished.

Supporters of the current flagbearer of the party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo do not appear to suffer any punishment when they engage in acts that can be said to violate party rules, he alleged.

Nana Ohene Ntow said disagreements and the existence of factions in any party is neither strange nor peculiar to the NPP.

“Parties all over the world do have these difficulties but skillful management of these difficulties makes parties stick together and win elections and become governments. In our case, I think that so far, we haven’t shown that we have managed these situations skillfully enough,” he said.

He said suggestions that the suspensions would create unity “and you would have peace and you would go and win, I think is a very oversimplified view.”
