PURC Sued Over Increases In Tariffs

A move by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to increase electricity tariffs by 59.2 per cent from Monday, December 14, 2015, has been slapped with a law suit.

The Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) and its Chief Executive Officer, Mr Kofi Owusuhene, also known as Kofi Capito, have dragged the PURC, the Volta River Authority (VRA), the Northern Electricity Development Company (NEDCO), the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to the High Court over the proposed tariff increase, which was expected to take effect from December 14, 2015.

According to the applicants, the decision of the PURC to approve 59.2 per cent increase in electricity tariff is unfair in the light of the persistent, irregular and unpredictable power outages popularly known as ‘dumsor.’
