School Children In Accra Educated On Road Safety

School children in parts of the Ga West, Ga South and Ga Central Municipal Assemblies in the Greater-Accra Region along the Awoshie-Pokuase road, have been educated on road safety.

The campaign targeted school children, commercial drivers, and pedestrians, because about 43 per cent of road users who are at risk, involve pedestrians and 19 per cent road crashes are fatal.

The 15-kilometre road from Awoshie to Pokuase was funded by the African Development Bank with four components-civil works, urban development, studies and project management.

As part of the civil works components, THCLR Ghana Limited, a Consulting Firm was tasked to undertake a six-month road safety awareness campaign within the Municipal assemblies.

Mrs Theresa Osei-Tutu, Executive Director of the Firm, said the campaign objective was to sensitize road users on the legal and criminal implications of non-observance of road regulations.

The campaign was also to educate the public to minimize the number and severity of accidents that occurred on new roads along the road corridor.

She disclosed that school children from 30 selected schools along the road corridor were selected to intensify education on road safety, and that activities had been organized for the children through the School Health Education Programme Coordinators and Teachers.

The teachers used activities such as role playing in road crossing, singing, quizzes, writing and drawing, to entertain them and educate the school children on road safety, and heighten their knowledge level as they used the new Awoshie-Pokuase road.

Mr Osei-Tutu explained that the campaign focused on school children, because they were more vulnerable to road accidents, had retentive memory and unformed behaviour patterns, and could influence their peers and family.
