A sod-cutting ceremony to begin the construction of a GH₡ 40 million, four- storey classroom block for the Atibie Nursing and Midwifery Training College has taken place at Atibie in the Kwahu East District.

The ceremony was performed for the construction of the first floor of the building which is estimated at GH₡1,000,000.00 and is expected to be completed in eight months.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Principal of the College, Mrs Paulina Osabutey explained that, in 2006, when the school was started, it had a student population of 158.

She said currently, the student population of the college has increased to 583 and the number of subjects being run has increased.

Mrs Osabutey said, the college is therefore under stress and needs five extra classrooms hence its decision to launch an appeal for funds and together with its internally generated funds embarked on the project to enable the college to have more classrooms.

She said when the ground floor is completed, the college would have additional three- unit classrooms, wash rooms, skills acquisition laboratory, library and offices.

Mrs Osabutey said there is the need for more resources to be mobilised for the completion of the remaining three floors to enable the college to get adequate classrooms to learn.

She therefore appealed to stakeholders including corporate institutions and the citizens of Kwahu both at home and abroad to donate and help raise funds for the completion of the project.

She announced that, the fifth batch of the registered midwifery final year students of the college who wrote their licensing examinations in August this year scored 100 per cent with some of the students having distinctions.

The Krontihene of Kwahu Atibie who represented the Atibiehene, Nana Kweku Ankoma II assured the school of the support of the traditional authorities of Atibie to enable it complete the project.
