A Malawian woman who was nabbed at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) with quantities of narcotic drugs suspected to be heroine on Wednesday appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.
Grace Sauti Phiri charged with importation of narcotic drugs without licence from the Minister of Health and possessing narcotic drugs without lawful authority had her plea reserved.
The court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh remanded Grace, a Civil Servant, into lawful custody pending further investigations into the matter.
The court is also yet to receive test results of the alleged narcotic drugs found on Grace.
Prosecution from the Attorney General Department informed the court that the Police has sent the drugs to the Ghana Standards Authority for examination and was awaiting the results.
Complainants are operatives of the Narcotics Control Board stationed at the KIA. Accused works as an Agricultural Gender Roles and Responsibility (AGRESSO) officer.
On December 21, this year, at about 1130 hours, accused was accosted during a profiling when she disembarked from Ethiopian Airlines Flight number ET 921 from Malawi-Adis-Accra.
Whilst going through arrival formalities, her black bag with tag “leave King,” officials found out that beneath the bag which contained her belongings, had some off white powdery substances.
When a field test was conducted it tested positive for heroine.
During interrogation, Grace claimed ownership and indicated that she was contracted by one Samuel Onyebachi Imo, a Nigerian National for a fee of 1,300 dollars.
According to the accused person, she was to deliver the bag to one Val, a Nigerian residing in Ghana. Efforts were being made to locate the said Val.
