We Were Waiting For AGs Advice

THE BRONG Ahafo Regional Police Command has expressed dismay in a publication entitled, ‘Businessman Accuses Cops Of Extortion’ in the DAILY GUIDE’s 22nd December, 2015 edition and wishes to correct some anomalies contained in the publication.

Explaining to DAILY GUIDE, the Brong Ahafo Regional Public Relation Officer of the Ghana Police Service, ASP Christopher Tawiah, confirmed the story but said the police has not refused to prosecute the suspects because of extortion. He said, after complainant, Kwadwo Adjei had reported the conduct of the three suspects to them (Wenchi Division), the suspects were accordingly arrested and 440 motor cycles were retrieved from them and were being prepared for court.

He said Adjei later came to the police and told them that the bikes be given back to the suspects so that they would resell and deposit the proceeds into his (Adjei) account. The police acceded to his request. Unfortunately Jacob Agogo, Alhassan Issaka and Benjamin Dove reneged on their promise so Adjei reported back to police this time with a power of attorney from the Attorney General’s Department for re-arrest, charge and prosecution the suspects.

The police accordingly picked the suspects, retrieved the 440 motorcycles and charged them with five counts among which were fraudulent bridge of trust and conspiracy to commit crime.

“As the dockets were being prepared for prosecution, the suspects also petitioned the Attorney General’s Department and the docket was called for by the department. The suspects said Mr. Adjei owed them their commission on the motor bikes they had sold earlier. The docket was forwarded to the AG’s department and we were waiting for their advice that was why the case seems to delay,”

ASP Christopher Tawiah however, revealed that the police had recently received the advice from the AG’s office and would soon start the prosecution.

He adds that it takes time to prepare a docket especially in criminal cases so people should bear with the police. He said issues of criminal proceedings involve processes saying, “no police man can act on his own initiative just as some people would wish.”
