Residents Takes Quarry Companies To Court Over Deadly Explosion

Aggrieved residents at Asuboi in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern region who were hit by a quarry explosion in the area have sued two quarry companies for causing huge damages to their property.

Numbered about 300, the residents have prayed the Koforidua High Court to order the companies to compensate them for damages caused and also ensure that due diligence is done during the blasting process.

Both companies sued are Chinese owned - China International Water & Electric Corporation and engineering company which has finished operating at the quarry site and handed over to a new one known as Anigord Famille Quarry Company.

According to Starr FM report – the residents have also complained that the activities of the quarry companies have affected their health.

However, the Nsawam police have also arrested one man who was found trespassing in the restricted quarrying community of Paebo, days after an explosion occurred in the area.

About thirteen people sustained serious injuries after an explosion at an abandoned quarry site in Paebo in the Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipality of the Eastern region.

Peace FM’s Michael Akrofi reports that the blast, which occurred last Wednesday evening, collapsed several buildings in the community and destroyed lots of property worth thousands of Ghana cedis.
