An Accra Magistrate Court Judge, Miss Arit Nsemoh, has chided prosecutors handling an assault case against outspoken boxer, Braimah Kamoko, better known as Bukom Banku, for the failure of the police to arrest him.
The Judge’s outburst follows the failure of the police to produce Bukom Banku in court for assaulting a 22-year-old unemployed man, Michael Abbey, even though Bukom Banku has been granting interviews all over the media.
When the case came to court, a bench warrant was issued on December 3, 2015 for his arrest but he failed to turn up for the fourth time the case was due for hearing.
Interestingly, the investigator handling the case, as well as lawyers for both parties were absent from court when the case was called.
Although the presiding judge indicated that the court had received notice that Bukom Banku had petitioned the Attorney General (AG) on the matter, she insisted the police must produce Bukom Banku in court on the next adjourned date.
The plaintiff’s worry
The complainant, Abbey, in an interview with The Mirror, said he was distressed at the turn of events and feared that the case would be tossed aside because Bukom Banku is a public figure.
Background
The Adjabeng Magistrate’s Court on December 3, 2015 issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Bukom Banku for allegedly assaulting Abbey, a resident of Akoto Lantey in Accra.
The facts of the case were that on October 1, 2015 at 2:00a.m., while Abbey was asleep with his wife, Bukom Banku, holding a machete barged into the room and dragged him outside.
Bukom Banku was alleged to have used the machete to beat the complainant mercilessly.
The commotion drew witnesses to the scene who pleaded with Bukom Banku to release the complainant.
But Bukom Banku, who was not satisfied with the beatings he meted out to the complainant, further dragged him to a spot at Bukom and forced him to kneel down.
There again, Bukom Banku was said to have used the machete to assault Abbey.
A report was made to the police but efforts to get Banku to report to the police for investigations haven’t been successful.
