The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has welcomed the decision by the Electoral Commission (EC) not to compile a new voter register for upcoming 2016 election.
In 2015, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and some pressure groups petitioned the EC to compile a new voters’ register. Their reason for this petition was that the current register is bloated with names of foreigners and minors. After a forum with all recognized political parties and stakeholders in the electoral process, the EC set up a five member committee to look into the petitions.
Based on the committee’s recommendations, the Electoral Commission released a statement on Thursday announcing that the arguments backing calls for a new voters register were not convincing.
In an interview with Citi News, a Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, George Lawson, said the party has been vindicated.
“Once the EC say that they’ve accepted the recommendation, we will all have to abide by it and move on. They said they were not able to convince the panel and all those who were there.
We said there should not be a new voter register, we have been vindicated. Our provision is the same thing that the panel said,” he said.
Mr. Lawson added, “the only thing is that all hands must be on deck for us to move this nation forward. This is an election year so all of us must abide by the report and move ahead.”
