Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Koku Anyidoho says promises made by the former Power minister, Dr Kwabena Donkor were problematic.

According to him, it is not up to him (Dr Kwabena Donkor) to announce an end to the power crisis but rather it is for Ghanaians to determine and judge for themselves on the state of dumsor.

“Don’t announce an end to dumsor if you solve it. In fact, Kwabena Donkor’s utterances on dumsor were very problematic. Mahama’s government will not accept any form of mediocrity.

“We need to be truthful to the people so that they can accept challenges and not rush to make promises we cannot fulfill” he stated on an Accra based radio station Monday.

The Minister of Power, Dr. Kwabena Donkor has resigned.

President John Mahama created the Ministry of Power on Saturday November 22, 2014 in a bid to resolve the country’s long-standing power crisis which has come to be known as dumsor.

The crisis has slowed economic growth, caused job losses and led to some deaths.

Dr. Kwabena Donkor, who was then the chairman of Parliament’s Energy Committee, was appointed to head the Ministry.

In June, 2015 Dr. Donkor assured Ghanaians that the national load shedding exercise would be over by December. He also promised to resign if he failed to deliver on schedule. 

On December 30, 2015, the Power Ministry issued a statement saying the load shedding programme was over, but shortly after that the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), Ing. William Amuna, who is also chairman of the Load Shedding Committee, stated emphatically that the erratic power supply situation in the country was not over yet. 

But Mr. Anyidoho, who believes Dr. Kwabena Donkor erred in announcing an erroneous end to the erratic power supply even when it was not totally over reiterated government’s determination to resolve the almost 4 year long power crisis in the country.

“This year is going to be about the humble approach of resolving our challenges and not rushing to make decisions which we cannot fulfill. Our times and seasons are in the hands of God and we shall surely fight the battle” he indicated.
