Ridge Hospital Staff Reject New Medical Director

The staff of the Ridge Regional Hospital are opposing the appointment of Dr Thomas Anaba, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Habana Health Service in Tamale, as the new medical director of the facility.

The appointment of Dr Anaba comes after Dr E. K. A Obeng Apori, the former medical director, retired on January 1, 2016 after almost six years of service at the hospital.

However, the new appointment did not go well with the staff who registered their displeasure on posters splashed at almost every building at the hospital, warning the hospital’s management not to accept or welcome Dr Anaba to the health facility.

Portions of the posters read: ‘Aluta! Aluta! Aluta! Imposition of Anaba As Medical Director, Recipe For Chaos At Ridge Hospital’.

According to the staff, Dr Anaba who also heads the Anaesthesiology Department at the University of Development Studies Medical School (UDSMS) should not have been given the appointment as the medical director because “Anaba ran away from Ridge due to his inability to withstand challenges.”

They also challenged the selection process through which Dr Anaba was appointed, calling on the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to probe the process.

On the other hand, the agitated staff are calling for the appointment of Dr Emmanuel Srofenyo, a consultant obstetrician/ gynaecologist, as the new medical director.

Giving their reasons for his appointment on the same poster rejecting Dr Anaba, they mentioned that Dr Srofenyo had stayed with the hospital during difficult times and exhibited commitment, good governance, innovation and team work.

“No Srof No Medical Director, Srof, A Faithful And Committed Servant Of Ridge, Srof Nie, Good Governance, Team Work And Innovation Nie! No Srof As Medical Director, No Work,” the posters read.

Management of the hospital is, however, handicapped in handling such situation because they are not the appointing authority.

Dr Ebenezer Appiah Denkyirah, director general of the GHS, speaking to DAILY GUIDE on the issue, pointed out that the appointment process which is handled by the Public Service Commission and the Human Resource Department of the GHS, went through the procedure of advertisement of the position and interviews held for those who applied.

He, however, disclosed that that if the staff have any issue with the appointment, they have to write to the appointing authority for investigations to be conducted and the matter resolved properly.
