The Bibiani Police has indicated that it is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that Mercy Nyamekye, also called Nana Yaa, the 40-year-old woman who allegedly stabbed a 28-year-old New Patriotic Party (NPP) women’s organiser, Amina Moro popularly called Kande, to death at Bibiani in the Western Region, is given tight security when going to court.
Kande, who was the Bibiani Zongo women’s organiser of the NPP, was allegedly stabbed to death by Nana Yaa who is believed to be the daughter of a bigwig of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the area.
Nana Yaa, after allegedly stabbing Kande with a knife and scissors on Tuesday, December 29, 2015, ran away from the area but the police managed to arrest her on Thursday, December 31, 2015.
According to the Police Command, information it had gathered indicated that some residents of Bibiani Zongo had planned to attack Nana Yaa anytime she was being sent to or from court.
Supt Nana Kumi, the Bibiani District Police Commander, who confirmed the arrest of the suspect in an interview with DAILY GUIDE, revealed that Nana Yaa could not be sent to court on Monday as planned.
He explained that because of security reasons, he sent his crime officer and the investigator in the case to court to find out whether the magistrate was around.
“But I was told that the magistrate has been called by the Chief Justice to Accra and so we are waiting; if he comes we will send the suspect to court,” he added.
He stated, “I am making every preparation to give adequate security to the suspect.”
Narrating how the sad incident occurred, a cousin of the deceased, Zynab Ayesha Passah, said the suspect and her cousin stayed in the same house and that there was a man called Moses who also stayed in the house who had a problem with Nana Yaa, the wife of the landlord.
Zynab added that Nana Yaa’s husband owed Moses an amount of money and so on that fateful Tuesday Moses decided to go to the landlord to collect his money.
When he got to the house, it was Nana Yaa who was around and enquired why Moses was there.
In the process, a quarrel ensued between her and Moses to the extent that some of the tenants had to come out from their rooms to calm tempers down.
Zynab Ayesha Passah said later her cousin (Kande) also came out and pleaded with Moses not to mind Nana Yaa. She added that Kande then decided to take Moses away from Nana Yaa’s presence and as the two were going, the suspect vented her anger on Kande and picked up a quarrel with her. This led to a fight between the two.
Zynab told the paper that some of the residents managed to stop the fight and called in Nana Yaa’s husband who came around, sent the suspect to her room and locked the door.
Kande was also asked to go to her room but as she was about to enter the room, Nana Yaa, whom those around thought was locked up in a room, suddenly came out through a back door leading to Kande’s area, wielding a knife and a pair of scissors.
The suspect allegedly rushed on Kande and stabbed her with the scissors and the knife from the breast to the chest.
