Following a series of disappointments in recent years, the playmaker claims only divine favour will end Ghana’s Afcon misery.
Black Stars midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah believes it would take a special hand of God to see Ghana lift the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations to hold in Gabon.
The Black Stars have suffered a series of near misses since lifting their last of four titles in Libya in 1982, having earlier ruled the continent in 1963, 1965 and 1978.
Since 1982, Ghana have been losing finalists on three occasions in 1992, 2010 as well as 2015 when they succumbed 9-8 on penalties to Cote d’Ivoire, and have also made successive semi-final appearances at the last five editions.
“We can win the Afcon in 2017,” Asamoah told Metro TV on Ghana’s chances.
“I can’t say much about the final that we lost to Cote d’Ivoire but what I know is that we did well. I don’t have any corrections. We just lost on penalties. If something is not for you, it’s not for you.
“Football can sometimes be strange and things that people are expecting don’t always happen. Now, I think that only if God says ‘this year, Ghana is going to win’ will it happen. With the favour in that, we can do it.
“In the final against Cote d’Ivoire, they did everything that they had to do but unfortunately, they couldn’t bring the cup home and it was all about hard luck. We played so well but at the end, we couldn’t win.”
Currently leading Group H of the 2017 Afcon qualifiers, the Black Stars will hope to make it three wins out of three matches when they take on Mozambique in March.
