Govt Did Not Consult Parliament Over Guantanamo Ex-Cons - MP

Deputy ranking member on the Parliamentary Select Committee on Foreign Affairs, Isaac Osei, has slammed the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hanna Tetteh, for not consulting the committee before housing the two Guantanamo Bay prisoners in the country.

There is public outcry in Ghana following the decision by the Mahama-led administration to offer humanitarian assistance to Mahmud Umar Muhammad Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammad Salih Al-Dhuby.

International relations experts have said the move could put Ghana on the radar of terrorist organisations.

The Public Affairs Counselor of the US Embassy in Ghana, Daniel Fennell, said the two ex-detainees of the popular detention camp pose no risk to society.

However, Mr. Isaac Osei who is also Member of Parliament for Subin Constituency in the Ashanti Region says the House was not consulted.

The committee on Friday, January 08, 2016, was in a crucial meeting over the matter as at press time and the Minister is likely to be summoned over the issue.
