Two jailed for looting female teacher

A 22-year-old farmer, Addo Nartey, and his friend Fianko Isaac, mason, aged 19, who conspired and looted a female teacher at Bomso in the Kwaebibirem District were on Friday sentenced to two years imprisonment each in hard labour by the Kade Magistrate Court. They were convicted on their own plea of guilty on two counts of conspiracy and stealing the personal belongings of Florence Okai, a teacher, valued at GHC770. The items stolen included a Television Set, video deck, tape recorder, TV stand, and a bed and foam mattress among others. Police Chief Inspector Tetteh Zorh, prosecuting, told the court presided over by Mr Kwaku Baah Frempong that the complainant travelled to Accra when school vacated, and on her return to the town on August 25, discovered that her room had been ransacked. He said the complainant started to conduct her own investigations during which she later learnt that some thieves had been arrested by the Asuom police. The complainant followed up and lodged a complaint at the police station where she identified some of the items retrieved from the thieves as hers. The prosecutor described the two as dangerous to society who should be given a severe sentence to serve as a deterrent to others. In convicting them, Mr Frempong described their conduct as most reprehensible, which should be condemned. He said at the time when most teachers would not like to serve in the rural communities, it would be unfortunate for those of them who decided to sacrifice to be harassed, and that Nartey and Fianko did not deserved to live in society.
