African Footballer of the year Award has lost it's credibility - Sammy Kuffour

Ex-Black Stars defender Sammy Kuffour has lamented over the reliability of the African footballer of the year award.

The former Bayern Munich star believes the accolade has lost its credibility following the latest decision by CAF to name Gabonese international Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the footballer of the year.

Aubameyang won the award at the expense of Ghana’s Andre Ayew and Ivorian international Yaya Toure.

The decision by CAF to name the Brussia Dortmund attacker as the best player on the continent has sparked massive controversies among football enthusiast in Africa.

Many ex-footballers, administrators and expects have shared their thoughts about Aubameyang’s remarkable feat.

Sammy Kuffour who was snubbed by CAF for the prestigious award in 2002 is the latest to add his voice on the pronouncement by CAF.

“I think this thing has lost its credibility. For some time now there have been controversies anytime CAF names the African footballer of the year, he spoke to Ghanasportonline.com’s editor Dan Kwaku Yeboah.

“‘it shouldn’t be like that. Now people don’t believe in it again. They (CAF) decide on whom to give the award to and that is bad.

“This has really made it lose it credibility and because now everyone thinks CAF is bias.”

Kuffour was voted by CAF as a member of the Top 30 African Players of All-Time in 2007.
