Drivers Commended For Helping Curb Road Accidents In 2015

The MTTU Divisional Commander in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality in the Western Region, ASP Emmanuel Broni, has commended drivers in the area for helping to reduce road accidents in 2015.

According to him, statistics made available suggest significant reduction in the level of accidents that occurred in the area in the year 2015.

Speaking to the media in an interview, the commander said the level of co-operation between stakeholders in the mining city contributed immensely to the reduction in road traffic accidents.

He said in 2014, 72 accident cases were reported. Out of that, 83 vehicles were involved, resulting in the death of 22 persons.

However, in 2015, 59 accidents were reported, with 72 vehicles involved and 10 deaths occurring in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Area.

In terms of the involvement of commercial vehicles, he said 48 were involved in accidents in 2014 against 44 in 2015. Private vehicles were 31 in 2014 against 26 in 2015, adding that only three motorcycle cases were reported in 2014 against two in 2015.

He said aside the effective role played by the drivers, who are the key stakeholders, the constant public education by the MTTU played a great role in curbing the accidents.

He said constant education, effective collaboration among key stakeholders and implementation of road traffic regulations were the only ways through which road traffic accidents in the area could be addressed.

He urged the public to co-operate with the police as law enforcement agents in their efforts to implement the country's road safety regulations.

The Tarkwa-Nsuaem area has often been described as an accident prone zone, but the Commander believes applying the right measures would address the problem and make the road safer for both commuters and drivers.

The main Tarkwa-Takoradi road, which has claimed many lives through accidents, he said, ought to be keenly monitored by all stakeholders.
