Ivorian Refugees Starving

Starvation has taken the better part of the Ampain Refugee Camp in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region with the Ivorian refugees in the camp complaining of food shortage for the past four months.

According to the refugees, they could hardly afford one square meal a day, stating that life at the camp has become unbearable for them.

Some of the refugees, who lamented about the harsh condition they are facing at the camp, told Ankobra Fm, a local radio station in the area, that the situation is so severe and could have serious repercussions.

They, therefore, called on government, the Ghana Refugee Board, the United Nation High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR) and other donor partners to intervene and salvage the situation.

Manager of the Camp, Mr. Kelly Forson, also confirmed the situation at the camp and added his voice to the call for assistance.

He said most of the refugees now consider Ghana as their home therefore it was important that both government and the UN gave them the requisite support to cater for themselves.

According to him, some of the refugees are skilled in their various professions whiles others have great talents, stating that, they can make great strides in their various endeavours with the requisite assistance.

He, therefore, called on all stakeholders to make efforts in assuaging the plight of the refugees and helping them realize their dreams.

Mr. Forson also commended the refugees for adhering to the laws of Ghana and desisting from bad acts and behaviours even during difficult times, urging that they should continue to live within the confines of the law.

The Ampain refugee camp houses over 5,000 Ivorian refugees who fled Ivory Coast in 2010 following disturbances that resulted from a general election conducted in that year.
