Benjamin Angenu To Represent Greater Accra

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Adentan, Mr Benjamin Angenu, has been elected to represent the Greater Accra Region on the National Executive Committee of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG).

The MCE was elected unopposed at a delegates conference in Accra. The conference was attended by five representatives from each of the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies in the Greater Accra Region.

The NALAG is a nationwide organisation and mouthpiece of all local authorities in the country.
Mr Angenu in his acceptance speech pledged to champion the cause of the region at the national association.

Earlier, the President of NALAG, Mr Mohammed Doku, said the association had so far opened three regional offices in Accra, Tamale and Ho and said he was hopeful that by the second quarter of the year, all the regions would have offices.

Financial challenges
He said the association was presently facing financial challenges as it lacked the needed inflow of cash.

The General Secretary of NALAG, Ms Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, said since 2001, the association had been receiving 0.32 per cent of Common Fund from all metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies.

That, she said, was not enough for the effective running of the association.

She said although over a decade ago the percentage was increased to 0.5, the amount was yet to be effected.

Presently, she said, the association was repositioning itself to match up to international standards and gave the assurance that NALAG would become a better mouthpiece of local government in the country.

Ms Lartey said NALAG in the near future would work at reaching out to its members in terms of policies as well as help its members to reach out to the electorates.
