It Wouldve Been A Travesty Of Justice If Zanetor

Daughter of former President Rawlings Dr. Zanetor Rawlings, says it would have been a travesty of justice if those who challenged her eligibility to lead the Klottey Korle Constituency as the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for the 2016 elections, had won their case in court.

An Accra High Court on Friday January 15 dismissed a suit filed by three members of the NDC in Klottey Korle constituency seeking to annul the results of the primaries that elected Zanetor.

The three, Joseph Narku Botchway, Jacob Amin and Reverend Michael Kwabena Nii Adjei Sowah went to court to challenge the eligibility of Dr. Zanetor Rawlings over allegations that she is not a registered voter.

But the court in its ruling said the plaintiffs did not demonstrate in anyway their claim that their rights would be violated if Zanetor is allowed to contest the elections on the NDC’s ticket.

The court also indicated that the action of the plaintiffs was an abuse of the court. This was after lawyers for Zanetor had asked the court to strike out the case.

It would be recalled that during the NDC’s primary on November 21, Dr. Rawlings could not cast her ballot because her name was not found in the voters’ register.

Zanetor beat the incumbent MP Nii Armah Ashietey in a hotly contested race.

Suggestions are that, those seeking Zanetor’s disqualification are being supported by the incumbent MP.

Speaking to Citi News after Friday’s verdict, an ecstatic Zanetor Rawlings said sustaining the case against her would have been a travesty of justice.

“I think that we’ve proven that democracy works and that the court also works because here is what happened; the people voted and chose who they wanted so it would have been a real travesty of justice for the court to actually overturn the choice of the people. So I am very happy that we’ve actually come this far and the work goes on.”
