An estimated 10,000 jobs will be up for grabs to university and Polytechnic students, as well as skilled and unskilled labour after the Mills Administration launches initiative called �Eco Brigade� this Friday at Esiama in the Western Region.
The initiative, a public-private collaboration, will be co-ordinated by the Ministry of Environment, Science & Technology is expected to benefit the Energy, Health, Tourism and Environment sectors in particular.
Explaining what the initiative entails in an interview with the Daily Post after last Thursday�s press conference by the ministry of Information, James Agyenim Boateng, Deputy Minister for Information said �Eco Brigade� is a well laid out plan by the government to create permanent jobs using indigenous labour in order to raise the standards of living of the families of the estimated 10,000 people to be employed. He said under the Initiative, Ghanaians will be trained to work in the about-to-boom oil industry in Ghana with the transfer of technology to Ghana for the development of the local capacity in the oil industry.
Furthermore, under the Oil Spillage Response Strategy (OSRS), core groups which would include local fishermen who are always at sea will be trained in the management of oil spillage at sea. �He said, to ensure that the OSRS yields positive results, the trainers of trainers have already received training in Nigeria and are all set to train other trainers and supervisors in the management of oil spillage.
Touching on how the initiative will benefit the environment, health and tourism sectors, the Deputy Minister explained that the initiative has an elaborate plan to keep Ghana�s long stretch of beach, from Elubo in the Western Region to Aflao in the Volta Region, constantly clean. Coconut trees will be planted along the stretch of beach land to offer shade, beauty and food to inhabitants as well as tourists.
�A clean beach, from Elubo to Aflao, will be a shot in the arm for our tourism sector as tourists from all over the world will love to come to Ghana to enjoy not only the proverbial Ghanaian hospitality but the serene and clean atmosphere our beaches would offer.
