Members of the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly on Friday confirmed the President’s nominee for the position of the Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive, Philip Adongo Aboore. He polled 44 votes out of the 51 votes cast by the members present.
His one-touch confirmation did not come as a surprise to many, as many assembly members had earlier complained about the effect of the absence of a substantive Municipal Chief Executive since the last one, Edward Ayagle, left office due to the expiration of his tenure of office.
It was during this period that the Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. James Zuugah Tiigah, acted as the MCE for Bolgatanga and supervised the erection of some “funny” rubber Christmas trees on some pavements of the Bolgatanga-Navrongo road.
The assembly had been without an MCE for five months, which some assembly members said stalled many development activities in the area.
The new MCE, Philip Adongo Aboore, has promised to operate an open door administration and will be ready to work with people who have good ideas for the development of the municipality during his reign.
He called on the assembly members to concentrate on the development of the area and not be partisan in their activities in the assembly and even in their Electoral Areas.
That way, he explained, they will be accepted by their electorates and he will support them in their quest to lobby and attract development projects.
Unfortunately, since the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly was inaugurated around October 2015, the assembly members have not been able to settle on any of the persons who have contested for the Presiding Member position. For four times, the assembly had been unsuccessful in its attempt to elect a Presiding Member.
However, on Friday, January 15 after the first round of voting, George Ayanoore, a government appointee, polled 33 votes and his only contender, Roland Abire, polled 19 votes.
After a long break and lobbying, Roland Abire stepped down to allow George Ayanoore to go unopposed in the second round. But for his decision, the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly would have been without a Presiding Member due to what many described as partisan and sectional interests.
The assembly members finally elected George Ayanoore as the Presiding Member, after a second round of voting.
