Akufo-Addo Was Not Consulted About Gitmo Detainees Aide

The office of New Patriotic Party flag bearer, Nana Akufo-Addo has denied reports that government consulted him before accepting to host the two former Guatanamo detainees.

Media reports earlier suggested that Ghana’s opposition leader was briefed about the decision six clear months before the arrival of the two in the country.

Security Analyst, Irbard Ibrahim who made the assertion alleged that the three time presidential candidate was privy to information prior to the coming of the Gitmo two.

“I can say for a fact that Nana Akufo-Addo was duly informed six clear months before the GITMO detainees touched down.

“He was informed by the Americans,” Irbard emphasised. “There was broad-based consultation. “We should look at this from the national issue. There is no cause for alarm, let’s have faith in our security,” Irbard said.

But Nana Addo’s office says statements in the media claiming Nana Addo supported government’s reasoning to accept the United States request is just a ploy by government appointees to share the blame with the opposition.

Mustapha Abdul-Hamid who speaks for Nana Addo told Citi News his boss was never consulted over the issue.

“It’s a blatant lie, it’s a fabrication, it’s a falsehood, it’s a rule calculated to claw back some legitimacy for a decision that clearly is unpopular in the eyes of Ghanaian,” he said.

He added, “The Minister of Foreign Affairs all this while has been trying to say that this is an Executive President and therefore the President needn’t have consulted anybody at all before taking the decision that we took. So how do you reconcile that argument with a new argument in the public domain that Nana Addo was consulted …”
