A 23-year-old man, Kwabena Donyina, was yesterday arraigned before the Wassa Akropong Circuit for allegedly defiling a one-year-old baby girl.
The bizarre incident, which shocked members of the mining community, occurred at Bawdie in Amenfi East District of the Western Region.
Chief Inspector Foster Berko told the court that medical examination conducted at the Wassa Akropong Government Hospital confirmed that the victim had been defiled.
Throwing further light on the matter, Chief Inspector Berko said the baby was said to be crawling in front of their room whilst the mother was taking a nap inside the room.
The suspect allegedly took advantage of the situation and picked the baby into his room, where he defiled her.
He said, “An eyewitness – incidentally a community nurse – who lives in the same house with Kwabena Donyina saw him abusing the bay sexually when she opened the suspect’s door to discuss something with him”.
Chief Inspector Berko said the nurse immediately raised an alarm, leading to the arrest of the suspect and a report to the police.
He said the suspect was placed in police custody prior to his appearance before the Wassa Akropong Circuit Court yesterday.
