Health Authorities Angry Over Low Family Planning Acceptance Rate

Low family acceptance continues to upset and frustrate efforts at improving the quality of health of the people – predominantly farmers, in the Atwima-Mponua District.

Mr. George Kwadwo Kyei-Fram, the District Health Director, said the situation was more troubling and a huge challenge as teenage pregnancy soared.

Addressing an end-of-year performance review workshop in Nyinahin, he said the trend could not be allowed to continue and must change.

He underlined the need to step up sexual and reproductive health education to aid adolescents together with married couples to make the right decisions and choices.

The health directorate would have to intensify its engagement with young people between the ages of 10-19 and set up baby-friendly facilities, he added.

To effectively perform this task, he called on the district assembly to take urgent steps to complete abandoned community-based planning and services (CHPS) compounds at Wansamire, Kuffour Camp and Okyerekrom alongside the refurbishment of the Saakrom and Gyereso Health Centres.

Mr. Kyei-Fram said this would significantly help to bring quality health services closer to the people.
He identified inadequate health professionals – doctors, midwives and medical assistants, lack of equipment and staff accommodation as the other constraints they had been grappling with.

He said despite these difficulties, they were determined to give it their all to improve the health of the people.
The District Health Director spoke of plans to strengthen disease surveillance in the communities.

The Atwima-Mponua District covers an area of approximately 894.15 square kilometres and has a population of about 108,235.
