The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), has called on government to upgrade day Senior High Schools (SHS) in the Upper East Region, to boarding facilities to foster cohesion among students. The conference said the move would also enable students to study in a conducive atmosphere, encourage team spirit and facilitate the regional integration idea of �One People One Nation�. Mr. Patrick Tangonyire, Regional Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers� made the call in a message he read on behalf of CHASS at the just ended Delegates� Conference of the Association in Bolgatanga. He expressed the need for the educational authorities to provide computers to the schools to support the pursuit of Information, Communication and Technology among students. Mr. Tangonyire asked Ghana Education Service to provide educational facilities and the right opportunities to schools in the North to bridge the gap between urban and rural schools. He expressed concern at the high number of students who are pursuing General Arts Programme to the neglect of other programmes and appealed to teachers in the junior high schools to step up guidance and counselling to lead students to explore their talents in other subjects. �We need to tune their (students) minds to science and technology courses to enable us (teachers) cope with educational trends in the world,� he said. Mr. Tangonyire urged teachers to preach and practice the virtues of commitment, time management creativity and discipline. The Third Quadrennial Regional Delegates Conference was held on the theme: �The Emerging Challenges in the Teaching Profession in Ghana � The Way Forward.� It gave the teachers the opportunity to review their performance during the past four years and to plan for the future.
