Self-styled policeman jailed five years

Kofi Emannuel, a 22-year old self-styled policeman has been sentenced to five years imprisonment in hard labour by a Kumasi Circuit Court. He pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful possession of police uniform and extortion. Police Chief Inspector Archibald Kwesi Fandoh told the court presided over by Mr Justice Emmanuel Amo-Yartey that on August 30, this year, the Police had information that somebody dressed in police uniform was extorting money from motorists at the Kumasi Airport roundabout at about 2100 hours. Some officers from the Asawasi Police Station were quickly dispatched to the place and succeeded in apprehending him. Police Chief Inspector Fandoh said at the station, the accused was identified by an officer he once helped to arrest a suspect. During that arrest, Emmanuel brought out a handcuff to be put on the culprit fled when he could not produce the keys to the manacle at the police station. Police Chief Inspector Fandoh said the convict indicated in his caution statement that he saw the uniform hanging on a dry-line with the handcuff lying on the ground and took them.
