Govt lauds Committee for Selfless Sacrifice

The Government has lauded members of the Dr Kwame Nkrumah Centenary Celebration Committee for their selfless sacrifice and dedication to national duty. It said the decision by the members, under the Chairmanship of Prof Akilagpa Sawyerr, to forfeit their allowances for the one year that the committee would be in place was exemplary. A Deputy Minister of Information, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, told the Daily Graphic in Accra on Monday that President John Evans Atta Mills has expressed his admiration for the members for their show of love for the nation. Following the governments decision to mark the 100th anniversary of the Founder of the nation, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the Vice-President Mr John Dramani Mahama, in June this year inaugurated the committee to plan the celebrations. The celebration has been built around three clusters of activities and events, with each cluster reflecting the particular character of the celebration. The first cluster is the birthday of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, which falls on September 21, 2009; the second will be the Independence Day celebration on March 6, 2010, and finally the Africa Liberation Day on May 25, 2010. In addition, a series of activities and events reflecting all the various aspects of the celebrations will be spread all over the country. Mr Okudzeto Ablakwa said it was important to applaud the members of the committee to demonstrate that public offices should not necessarily be used to take from the Government, but as a way of giving to the state
