No single event helps our musicians measure how well they are appreciated in a particular year like the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) does.
Submission of entries ended on Sunday, January 31 for the big annual awards event and several musicians working in a variety of genres, are on their marks, waiting to see if their names will appear in the nominations list due out soon.
The awards scheme will consider works released between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2015 and thousands of them are said to have been sent off to the offices of the event organiser, CharterHouse. Obviously, every artiste that has sent in an entry is hoping to be nominated in a category and possibly go on to pick up the award in that category.
Some of the musicians have been coy about their aspirations while others are expressing confidence publicly.
One of the artistes brimming with faith in the gospel arena is Mary Owusu and the album she is wielding to unlock the VGMA nominations door is her third collection titled ‘Onyame Beye N’adwuma.’
The title track which has been receiving ample airplay, is an infectious praise piece. She strongly suggests in the song that God has His plan for executing whatever He wants in the lives of His children.
“It is a meaningful piece which has touched many hearts. I trust it will also touch the board in charge of coming up with the VGMA nominations to see its musical value. They are knowledgeable people in music so I’m confident they will weigh it well and crown my effort with nominations in the requisite categories,” she said.
“An award at the VGMA is something to cherish. People may say what they like about the awards but in my heart, I know a VGMA trophy is something to cherish forever and I’m looking eagerly forward to a couple of them.”
Several other artistes such as Kofi Kinaata, Bisa Kdei, Nicholas Omane Acheampong, Wisa, Kofi Gyan, Jupita and Patience Nyarko have all on various platforms, expressed confidence about being nominated for awards this year.
“It is an open race and we so far trust the fairness around it so we can only keep our fingers crossed and hope we get blessed with nominations. Somehow, getting nominated is even a sort of honour but winning a VGMA trophy is what one TRULY desires,” Mary Owusu said.
