The youngster is in line for a second Germany call-up, five months after pulling out of the country’s U-21 game due to injury.

Ghana target Gideon Jung has been named in Germany’s provisional squad for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games to be held in Brazil, according to German sports news outlet MOPO, sparking concerns that the midfielder could be on his way to joining the senior team.

“He [Jung] had a great start in the first round with a little trouble but he’s doing well now,” coach Horst Hrubesch was quoted as saying. “I like him. We’ve been observing him intensely. It’s because of the way he plays.”   

Jung has been a revelation this season in the German topflight, starting Hamburg’s first three league games and going ahead to make 10 more appearances.

His exploits have not gone unnoticed as Ghana Football Association vice president George Afriyie has hinted that the 21-year-old is on the radar of Black Stars coach Avram Grant, alongside Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Teye Partey and Spain U-21 and Athletic Bilbao forward Inaki Williams.

Born to Ghanaian parents in Dusseldorf, Jung had earlier received a call-up to the European giant’s U-21 side last September but turned down the opportunity over injury concerns.

The midfielder, who can also play in central defense, will still be eligible to switch allegiance to Ghana even if he makes the German’s final squad for the upcoming tournament.
