Tema Rotary Club donates books to school

The Rotary Club of Tema (RCT) on Thursday donated 400 mathematics and science books worth 4,000 dollars to Saint Maria Goretti Junior High School (JHS) of Nandom in the Upper West Region at a short ceremony at the Rotary Centre in Tema. The donation is collaboration by the RCT, the Ghana Education Service and the GETFund known as the Book Distribution Project and dates back to 1994. Mr John Bisiw, President of RCT who presented the books, said they were supplied to the Club by the Brothers Brother Foundation (BBF) of the United States for onward distribution to needy schools. Mr Bisiw said since the inception of the project, RCT had given out a total of 3,635,104 books. He said so far 18 senior high schools in the Upper West Region, 22 in the Upper East Region and 35 in the Northern Region had benefited from the scheme. Additionally, he said, seven senior high schools in other regions had also been recipients of the donation. Mr Sammy Buckman, Chairman of the Book Committee, said the RCT would soon establish reading clubs in less endowed schools to help the children to become fluent in the English Language. Mrs Genevieve Penn, a former pupil of St Maria Goretti JHS, received the books on behalf of the Headmistress, Madam Elizabeth Dery, and thanked the donors.
