A thirty-three member team of volunteers from Pennsylvania in the United States of America is in Ghana to undertake a number of projects and also offer healthcare services in partnership with Apam Catholic Hospital. The team which is visiting the country for the fourth time since 2006, include educationists, medical, and construction experts. It had entered into an agreement with the management of the hospital to come to Ghana every September to assist with healthcare delivery to the people for a token fee, and also to provide social services in the areas where their services would be needed. Over 400 major surgeries, including plastic surgeries, had been performed by the team during their previous visits. Currently 35 had been performed within two days of their arrival at Apam last Sunday afternoon. Speaking at a welcoming ceremony held in their honour on Wednesday, Mr. Theophilus Aidoo-Mensah, Gomoa West District Chief Executive, expressed gratitude to the team for its immense contributions to the development of the people of the area. �I have been informed that you have also donated medical supplies, a pick-up water tanker, and a number of beds to the hospital for distribution to the sub-districts, apart from the library you rehabilitated and stocked with books, and the books you donated to all schools in the town,� he said, and thanked them for the generous gesture. I have also learnt that you have plans to construct a waste water treatment plant to help in the sewerage system, provide a cold storage facility, and dentistry in addition to the services rendered at the hospital, he said. The DCE assured the team of the cooperation of the Assembly in ensuring the success of their trip. He promised to discuss with government the possibility of waiving some of the cost incurred in shipping their supplies into the country. Dr Bob Davis, the leader of the team, was grateful to the management of the hospital for their support and cooperation, which had made their stay memorable during their previous visits. He expressed the determination of the team not only to help with healthcare delivery, but also in improving the standard of education and providing essential amenities to some communities. Mrs. Sarah Sarkwah, District Community Health Officer, who represented the District Director of Health Services, commended the hospital management for making the partnership with the American team a success, and urged the two partners to sustain the initiative. Nana Edu Effrim X, Chief of Apam, who chaired the function assured the visitors of his preparedness to offer whatever it takes to make their work at Apam a success.
