TUC Boss Speaks Today

The Socialist Forum of Ghana begins weeklong marking of 50th anniversary of the illegal overthrow of the first government of the country today with a speech by the Secretary-General of the Ghana Trade Union Congress, comrade Kofi Asamoah on Nkrumahism and National Development – 50 years on.
Nkurmah’s strong belief in the ability of Ghanaian workers was a very important plank in his vision for the country and in his attempt to create a modern Industrial state in Ghana.

Under Nkurmah, homelessness and other forms of workers oppression were to be obligated with the creation of workers Brigades, the creation and expansion of State Construction, Housing, and Transport companies.

Thursday’s discussion will look at the impact of the February 24th Coup on the Empowerment of Women and Women’s organizations at the Freedom Centre.

It is no secret that Ghana was once a leader in women’s empowerment in the world but appeared to have missed the road after the infamous coup.

The discussion will help to define the situation of women in Ghana now with a view to identifying how to accelerate the current struggle for women’s empowerment.

The climax of the week will be grand symposium to be addressed by Dr. Yao Graham and Professor Raymong Osei. The weeklong even dubbed Ghana’s Day of Shame, 50th Anniversary of the February 24, 1966 coup and under the broad theme Ghana’s Day of Shame, 50 years on, pursuing a National Development Agenda.
