Queen mother calls for reintroduction of puberty rites

Nana Yaa Dudaa Kani, Queen mother of Nkoranza Traditional Area, has said teenage pregnancy was a serious traditional taboo that should be discouraged. She has therefore called for the re-introduction of the puberty rite and other useful traditional values that could guard against teenage pregnancy. Nana Dudaa Kani, who was addressing a meeting of the Nkoranza Queen mothers Association at Nkoranza on Tuesday, appealed to parents to monitor the movements of their daughters and provide them with their needs. Rev Fr Peter Kwadwo Sakyi, Minister in-charge of the Nkoranza St Barnabas Anglican Church, appealed to queen mothers to live above reproach so as to maintain their dignity as community leaders. He said the chieftaincy institution was created and endorsed by God and therefore appealed to them to ensure people lived in unity, peace and understanding. Rev. Fr Sakyi called on traditional leaders to de-emphasise expensive funerals and channel the resources into developing their communities.
