THE GHANA Health Service (GHS) says the Jaman North District in the Brong Ahafo Region has crossed the epidemic threshold in the country, according to its latest report.
The first case of pneumococcal meningitis was confirmed in the Tain District and later spread to Jaman North District on January 29, this year.
According to the report, an infected 18-year-old-boy died some few minutes after arrival at the Sampa Government Hospital, which has so far seen nine districts and municipalities in the region witnessing the outbreak.
Since the outbreak, the situation in Jaman North is getting worse by the day due to high number of cases being recorded in the district daily.
According to Dr Emmanuel Teviu, a medical superintendent at Sampa Government Hospital, 19 people have so far been infected with the disease, leaving three of them dead.
He said a rapid response team has since been formed to control the situation through contact with community members, trace infected households and sensitise the whole district.
DAILY GUIDE checks at the emergency department of the hospital showed how the facility is inundated with suspected cases. A lot of patients lay on the bare floor due to shortage of beds at the hospital.
Though the district assembly through the district NADMO office has donated 30 mattresses to help contain the situation, there are still more patients on the floor. Dr Teviu mentioned that “my outfit is trying to get space to contain the inflows as new cases are still being reported.”
