Stunted Growth High In Northern Region

Ghana Health service has held it annual nutrition review meeting in the northern region on the theme: Harnessing multi-sectorial effort in reducing stunted growth in the northern region.

They discovered that, northern region is facing multiple deprivations which has impact on nutritional outcomes. The region has 20.0% of five year children underweight, 33.1% and 6.3% stunned .

Northern Region is currently faced with high rate of micronutrient deficiencies (aneamia, IDD and Vitamin A deficiency). The rate of breastfeeding remains low as 64.7%. Nutritional situation in the region has remained unchanged for over two decades.

In spite of reduction in anaemia prevalence in women from 59.3% in 2008 to 47.5% in 2015, anaemia prevalence in children has recorded no significant change over the period.

The region now in collaboration with health partners have implemented many interventions to scale up infant and young child nutrition activities as well as improve knowledge and skills of service providers in nutrition behaviour change communications. 

Other interventions includes, Rehabilitation/management of Malnourished children (CMAM), Nutrition support for PLWHIV/AIDS (NACS), Community based growth promotion, Baby-friendly Hospital initiative, Supplementary feeding programme and Micronutrient Deficiencies control.
