Man Arrested For Alleged Visa Fraud

A 29-year-old man who allegedly defrauded his victims on the pretext of securing travelling visas for them has been arrested.

The suspect, Erasmus Adama Nketia, who had been on the run for the past three years, was finally nabbed in Tema after his sojourn in South Africa.

Modus operandi

Nketia, who claimed to be a car dealer, took various sums of money from his victims, who often travelled from Kumasi in the Ashanti Region to Accra after he had promised to secure them visas.

Four of the victims who reported the matter to the police claimed to have paid a total amount of $45,000 to the suspect to help secure them visas to enable them to travel to the United States of America.

Arrest

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Director of the Document and Visa Fraud Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mr Seth Sewornu, said the police had mounted a search for Nketia since 2013 after receiving several complaints about his fraudulent activities.

During investigations, he said, it came out that Nketia had eloped to South Africa.

On his return to Ghana, the police had a tip-off that he was in Tema where he was traced to and arrested.

The suspect, in his caution statement, admitted the offence.

The Tema Police later handed him over to the Document and Visa Fraud Unit.

Mr Sewornu urged other victims of the fraud to report their cases to the unit to help it in its investigations.
