Change GNAT Constitution

The National Coordinator of the Womens Desk of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Ms Helen Awurasa, has called for a change of the constitution of the association to reflect the views of both male and female members of the association. She said the change would help effect changes in the structure and budgeting of GNAT in a way that would give legal status to the GNAT Ladies Association (GNAT-LAS) and encourage more participation of female teachers in GNAT activities. Ms Awurasa was speaking at the opening of the First Quadrennial Eastern Regional GNAT-LAS Roundtable in Koforidua on Thursday. Development of education in Ghana, the role of the female teacher was the theme. She said the active participation of female teachers in the activities of GNAT would encourage better and more sustainable development of the association. The Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Ms Bernice B. Boateng, said the national constitution was a reflection of male realities because it was drafted and approved by male dominated institutions. She therefore urged female teachers to overcome the challenges facing them to fight and enter parliament and help give the laws of the country standards that take into considerations both male and female aspirations. She urged more women to take part in the next district assembly elections. A former Regional Director of Education, Mrs Akosua Takyiwah Adu, appealed to female teachers to build their capacity by making efforts to improve upon their education.
