Nicholas Asare, a 33-year-old driver, is currently in the grips of the Eastern Regional police assisting in investigations for allegedly smuggling 64 bags of Indian hemp popularly known as wee, to La Cote d’Ivoire.
The driver was busted on the Kpong-Atimpoku-Tema highway, when a police patrol team on duty at Akuse had a tip-off that a Mercedes Benz truck with registration number, AW 138-15, was conveying the dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp loaded in a container with about 4,589 parcels parked in the 64 bags.
The Eastern Regional Crime Officer, Chief Superintendent Edward Fakye-Kumi, briefing the media on Tuesday, said the substance was intercepted on Saturday, February 20 at Kpong at 5:30 pm.
According to him, the police team, after an extensive search was carried on the vehicle, discovered that 64 bags of the substance had been parked under 129 bags of poultry feed ostensibly to outwit the police on the road.
Chief Supt. Fakye indicated that the suspected Indian hemp would be sent to the Police Forensic Unit in Accra for testing, adding that the suspect was currently assisting with further investigations.
