President John Dramani Mahama’s recent boastful comment that his achievements will speak for him in this year’s November 7 general elections is beginning to manifest as chiefs, elders and Imams in the various Zongos in the Eastern region have endorsed him for a second term in office.
According to the Zongo leaders, despite the numerous challenges that confronted the Mahama administration at its infant stage, the president has chalked remarkable successes, adding that it will be underserving if he is not reelected in the upcoming presidential election.
"In all fairness, the President deserves a second term to execute all his vision. Four years is not enough for any President to solve all problems of a country, all over the world,” Spokesperson of the group and Chairman of Eastern regional Council of Zongo Chiefs, Alhaji Abubakar Umar noted.
The over hundred Muslim and Zongo leaders across the various Muslim communities in the region made the declaration at a meeting with the new Eastern regional minister, Madam Mavis Ama Frimpong and regional executives of the ruling party.
Alhaji Abubakar Umar added that “President Mahama faced very big challenges in his first term but he has performed quiet well and we believe that giving him another term would help him to do better; after 8 years we can change the party for the next party to take over to continue".
On her part, the Eastern regional minister, Mavis Ama Frimpong said "persons with fair judgment can testify that the president has performed well in spite of the challenges that confronted him”. She made reference to the numerous labor agitations and the energy crisis as some of the challenges that the President has had to surmount.
This endorsement comes less than two weeks after vice chancellor of the University for Professional Studies, Prof Joshua Alabi also advocated for a second term for President Mahama and his National Democratic Congress.
According to the respected academician, who doubles as a Fellow of the Ghana Institute of Taxation, Ghana stands to gain a lot under Mahama in the next four years.
“I have known Mahama from childhood. We lived around the same vicinity in Tamale. He is a humble guy,” Prof. Alabi said on Starr Chat with Bola Ray.
“He is doing well and should be given a second chance,” the former Minister of State for the Northern region noted, adding: “He is one president who has gone through a lot of demonstrations and he has been able to maintain his calm.”
“I strongly believe that given the next term, he will move Ghana to a different level. That is my belief. I’m saying this not because I’m lazy, but I just admire him for the way he’s been able to hold himself up. A lot of people will have been off with the numerous problems that he faced – the problem [election petition] in court for about eight months, single spine problems – and these are problems, which were not caused by him, but then once you are the president, you are in charge… he is really focused,” he noted.
These open endorsements are contrary to claims by the opposition New Patriotic Party and its appendages that the Mahama government has woefully failed and therefore; undeserving of a second term in the upcoming elections.
