The Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has confiscated 188 kilogrammes of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp at Nima 441, a suburb of Accra.
The confiscation followed an operation on February 29, 2016 to crack down on drug trafficking in the area.
A 25-year-old man, Kwame Dook, alias Bob, who was arrested in the exercise, is assisting the police in their investigations.
Manhunt
Speaking to the Daily Graphic in Accra Wednesday, the Director-General of the CID, Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr Prosper K. Agblor, said the police had mounted a manhunt for some accomplices believed to be behind the drug trafficking network.
The operation, he said, was part of efforts to fight narcotic drug trafficking in the country.
“The CID is determined to fight narcotic drug trafficking. We have come up with a grand scheme of intelligence gathering and sharing network involving all stakeholders,” he said.
Destruction
On the achievements of the network, Mr Agblor said more than 200 acres of cannabis sativa farms were destroyed along the Dayi River in the Volta Region between 2014 and 2015.
Additionally, over 50 tonnes of cannabis sativa were seized during the same period.
“In 2015 alone, more than 30 tonnes of cannabis sativa were seized from drug traffickers,” he said.
In all, he added, 81 cannabis sativa traffickers were arrested in the country last year, out of which 36 had been convicted.
Two of them were acquitted and discharged by the court, while the rest were awaiting trial.
“The CID is making frantic efforts to combat the drug menace and will encourage the public to continue to volunteer information to the law enforcement agencies, particularly the police,” the CID Chief said.
According to him, drug abuse had the potential of increasing the crime wave in the country, since “most of the perpetrators of violent crimes are abusers of hard drugs”.
