President John Dramani Mahama has re-nominated former Municipal Chief Executive Officer for Ejisu-Juaben, Mr Kwaku Afrifa Yamoah Ponkor, for the same position after he was voted against by the assembly at the last election.
Despite being unsuccessful in his first attempt, Yamoah Ponkor, per the Local Government Act, has two more opportunities to seek the mandate of the assembly to become the CEO of the Municipal. The date for the election is yet to be fixed by the regional minister, Mr John Alexander Ackon, but sources say it could be held before the end of this month.
The former MCE told Graphic Online he was upbeat about securing the needed votes to reclaim his seat.
He said he was relying heavily on government appointees in the assembly and members who were absent at the last elections to win the seat.
His re-nomination by the president is in accordance with article 243(1) of the 1992 constitution and section 20(1) of the Local Government Act, Act 462.
Yamoah Ponkor is one of 13 people nominated by the president to occupy either the MCE or DCE positions which have become vacant for some time now.
They are Abdullai Seidu for Gushegu District Assembly, Eric Osei, Atebubu-Amantin District Assembly, Sulemana Adama, Tain District Assembly, Opong Frimpong, Asunafo South District Assembly, Stephen Boadu, Sene West District Assembly, Pius Kwame Nkuah, Sefwi Akontombra District Assembly and Albert Abrefo Awortwi, Mpohor District Assembly.
The rest are Nicholas Amankwaa, Amenfi East District Assembly, Zagoon Saeed Ishmael, Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem Municipal Assembly, Albert Kwasi Inkoom, Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District Assembly, Derek Ohene-Asifo Bekoe, Upper West Akyim District Assembly and William Seddoh, Biakoye District Assembly. Despite his optimism, Yamoah Ponkor, touted as the MCE who have brought more development to the assembly in recent times still has a lot of work to do to convince his people to vote for him.
He was, together with the president, cursed by some people with schnapps and eggs days to the first election invoking the powers of the Antoa Nyamaa deity. His opponents also threatened assembly members who would vote for him.
His opponents have complained about his alleged dictatorial style and the way he wants things done.
