Anglogold Ashanti Addresses Health Needs Of Women In Host Communities

Over Five hundred women of all walks of life from AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine’s host communities have benefited from primary health care services organized by AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine at Adieyie a host community of the Mine and its surrounding communities. The medical screening with all expenses borne by the mine formed part of activities to mark the 2016 World Women’s Day celebration.

It also sought to celebrate the hard work and contributions of women in the Mine’s host communities and marked under the theme, “Healthy Women, Healthy Iduapriem”. The free screening increased awareness and knowledge of ways of improving female health and their well-being. The Community Medical outreach included special talk on women’s health, treatment of diseases, breast screening and consultation.

In an interview, the Physician Assistant of the Mine, Cynthia Odoom Wilson underscored the need for women to maintain and adopt healthy living life modifications such as sanitation, healthy diet and family planning in order to prevent diseases especially diabetes, hypertensions, cancer and other sexual related diseases. She also advised the women to seek prompt medical attention when the need arises. The diseases mainly seen were Respiratory Tract Infection, Malaria, Hypertension, Skin Infection and others and those who need further assessment and management were referred.

Madam Grace Addison who could not hide her joy remarked that “ I made it a point to partake in the medical screening because the Mine’s hospital has been brought to us with quality medication for our various ailments. On behalf of all women present, we express our appreciation to Iduapriem mine for responding to our health needs” she said.

A Community Development and Gender Relations Officer of the Mine, Ms. Roseline Dauri explained the rationale behind the community health outreach which commemorated the World Women’s Day Celebration. According to her, in addressing the health needs of women, Iduapriem mine, will continue to roll out more of such interventions to ensure the women are empowered at all levels of life, a phenomenon she noted was in line with the 2016 objectives of the Mine.

Early on, a special health talk on women’s reproductive health was organized to sensitize the women on certain diseases and its effects on women. The interactive session afforded the women the opportunity to ask pertinent questions concerning women’s health and ways of avoiding them.

AngloGold Ashanti is committed to bringing healthcare closer to its host communities through some of these initiatives. Other communities which benefitted from the outreach also called on the Mine to sustain the initiative since it is a resolve to complement the efforts of government.
