Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr has debunked claims from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that President John Mahama is an ‘incompetent’ President.
The veteran Journalist said on Adom FM Thursday that the President has so far displayed high levels of competence hence he is shocked that certain persons especially those from the NPP describe him as incompetent.
The debate on the competence or otherwise of the President became an issue following his statement at an NDC rally in Accra in 2015 that functionaries of the NPP were making attempts to portray him as incompetent.
Singling out Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for criticism, President Mahama said the running mate to the opposition party’s flagbearer had not held any position or undertaken any responsibility that came close to the work of the President, yet he always saw the need to call him (Mahama) incompetent.
“All of you guys have never ever come near the Presidency before. You know what it means to be President? And you stand and say ‘incompetent Mahama administration’, 'Incompetent Mahama administration'. What do you know about competence?
"All of them in the offices they occupy, they should show us what competence they display… My competence is not for them to judge, it is for the people of Ghana to judge, and I know that come 7 November 2016, the people of Ghana will judge my competence and they will give me another victory by the grace of the almighty God," he said.
In a reply, Dr Bawumia said he would prefer to label the President as someone who is ‘competent in incompetence’ claiming that the President has mismanaged the country’s economy and collapsed several social intervention programmes introduced by the erstwhile Kufour administration.
Kwesi Pratt however insists he does not agree that President Mahama is incompetent as according to him, he has so far ‘not seen anything that proves that Mahama is incompetent.’
“So far I have not seen anything that indicates that the President is incompetent…,” he said.
He cautioned the president rid him self of persons around him whose actions put him in a bad light.
“In times like this when competence is an issue and you make such mistakes in (the now infamous 59th) Independence (Day) brochure, then it confirms the assertions that he is incompetent…so he must fire certain people,” he said.
