NPP Manhyia North Parliamentary Elections Postponed To March 20

The long awaited parliamentary primary of the Manhyia North constituency of the New Patriotic Party in Ashanti has been postponed to March 20, 2016.

This is to enable the party more time to prepare cogently and adequately for the elections.

The election had initially been scheduled for Sunday March 13, 2016 but the Regional Chairman, Mr Bernard Antwi Boasiako had to postpone it to March 20 to ensure that a committee to organise and supervise the elections, was constituted in line with the party’s constitution.

This followed an objection by the incumbent Member of Parliament, Mr Collins Owusu Amankwah that the Regional Chairman had no mandate to constitute a committee to supervise the elections.

Mr Amankwah who is seeking re-election had argued that the Regional Chairman had no mandate per article 11 of the NPP’s constitution to select a committee to organise the elections

Rather, he said it was the national executive in consultation with the constituency elections committee that should constitute a committee to supervise the primary.

He has also raised issues with the chosen venue for the elections and wants it to be changed.

After two botched primaries over the disagreement of the photo album compiling a list polling station executives who would constitute the electoral college, the two candidates on Monday, agreed on the legible delegates at a meeting with the NPP regional chairman, Mr Bernard Antwi Boasiako and a committee formed to oversee the primary.

The incumbent Member of Parliament, Mr Collins Owusu Amankwah together with his contender, Nana Osei Banfo and their campaign teams went through the lists of the new elected polling station executives with the Regional Committee headed by Mr Maxwell Kofi Jumah and agreed on the composition.

Last week, the constituency conducted a new polling station election to elect new executives to constitute the delegates that would elect the party’s parliamentary nominee.

The constituency has been in and out of courts over the constituency executives. The disagreement over the membership of the constituency executives led to the constituency being prevented from taking part in the regional and national congresses that elected the executives.
