Members of a group calling itself the Concerned Clergy Association of Ghana (CCAG) have appealed to political parties and pressure groups to stop attacking the personality of the Electoral Commissioner, Madam Charlotte Osei, and deal with the pertinent issues.
The group also stressed the need for Ghanaians to give the EC “enough room to work” by allowing it to discharge its duties without interfering in its work.
In a press statement issued by the President of CCAG, Bishop Prince Benny Wood, the group said the “needless attacks” against the EC boss and her work would not help the country in the build-up to Election 2016.
Since her appointment by President John Mahama last year, Madam Osei has come under attacks by some political parties and pressure groups.
The latest of the attacks was against the creation of an 18-member steering committee mandated to oversee the 2016 polls.
The EC’s latest announcement did not go down well with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), as the party questioned its relevance and composition.
Use the right channel
Bishop Wood said the group was worried about various comments and contributions some sections of the public had made in relation to the steering committee.
He indicated that if the commission or the EC chairperson had erred, it was important to use the right means to deal with the issue and not conjecture matters to make issues worse.
“If you continue attacking the personality instead of the issues, do you expect her to run the elections for you? It’s better to shun the blame game and let’s move on as a nation,” Bishop Wood stated.
