More Than 250 People Displaced By Rainstorm

Heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds that hit Nkrankese, a farming community in the Adansi South District had left behind misery and massive destruction.

More than 250 people had been displaced by the rainstorm, which completely destroyed over 20 houses, toppled electricity poles and badly damaged the roofing of the local basic school and a church.

One person, whose name was given as Felicia Mensah, was reportedly injured by falling debris and was treated at the New-Edubiase Government Hospital.

Mr. Thomas Atafuah, Nkrankese Area Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the damage caused was huge and widespread.

He said the immediate priority was to mobilize relief items in support of the victims.

The disaster, he said, had reinforced the urgent need for the people to act together to stop the increasing destruction of the forest cover.

Nana Kwame Otiba, chief of the town, appealed to government to move quickly to bring some comfort to the displaced.

He also called for decisive action against illegal chainsaw operators and loggers by the Forestry Commission to protect the vegetation.
