Ghana is on the threshold to becoming Africa’s preferred education tourism destination.

“...we will set Ghana to become Africa’s number one education destination,” Mr Kwaku Kwarteng Yeboah, I-Texon Programme Co-ordinator, told the Ghana News Agency at the Volta Regional Higher Education Fair organized by the organisation in Ho.

Mr Yeboah said I-Texon whose objective was to spearhead awareness about tertiary education opportunities in Ghana had made inroads in Nigeria to project Ghana as a preferred higher education destination in Africa.

I-Texon is organizing a three-day fair at the Ho Polytechnic, where some tertiary institutions would be showcasing themselves to second cycle students in the Region.

He said I-Texon embarked on the initiative in 2008 to tackle the lack of vital information about opportunities available in tertiary institutions for second cycle students. 

Ho Polytechnic, Koforidua Polytechnic, Africa University College of Communication (AUCC), University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), DATA Link, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ghana (ICAG), Ashesi University College and DAAD of Germany are taking part in the Fair.

The students would be given the opportunity to know the entry requirements, academic, career and professional programmes on offer by the respective institutions, arrangements for paying fees and financial intermediation packages, career and professional prospects on completion of courses.

Some of the third year Senior High School students, who visited the Fair, described it as useful because of the depth of information it provided.

Professor Emmanuel K. Sakyi, Rector of Ho Polytechnic, said the Fair was a useful complement to the outreach programmes and advertisements by the participating tertiary institutions.

It was also a useful career counselling session for students on specialized areas not known to them.

Professor Sakyi suggested that parents and guardians, heads of second cycle institutions, and educational managers at regional and district levels, should also attend future Fairs as important stakeholders.                   
Madam Charlotte Owusu, the Fair Director, commended Ho Polytechnic for “stepping in” to host the Volta Regional Fair.

She described the Fairs as exclusive sources of reliable information, which many parents and their wards were unaware of.

Similar Fairs were held in Bolgatanga, Takoradi, Koforidua and Cape Coast this year.
