The Ghana Book Trust (GBT) has announced an award scheme for outstanding African Writers and authors. Winners of the �Burt Award for African Literature� would receive cash prizes ranging from GH�4,000 to GH�16,000. Additionally, they would work with local publishers to produce 3,000 copies of literature for schools in rural areas. Mr R.A. Amoako, Executive Director of the Trust, said the scheme is being supported by CODE, a Canadian Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). He was addressing a five-day training workshop dubbed �Reading Ghana� for 30 selected tutors of Colleges of Education, Circuit Supervisors, basic school teachers and officials of the Ghana Education Service (GES). It was aimed at helping the participants to develop appropriate methods for the production of standard manuals to encourage reading habits in the youth. Amansie West and Kwabre Districts in Ashanti are piloting the �Reading Ghana� project. Mr Amoako said the GBT has identified a number of schools for the supply of 45,000 books and furniture. The Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Mr Joseph Kwabena Onyinah, said Ghana was grateful to Canada for its immense support towards the improvement of the country�s education. He encouraged the youth to adopt the habit of reading.
